Kim Yuna: The Story Uncovered

Finally, the Queen of Figure Skating has been declared; Kim Yu Na the South Korean superstar athlete.

Kim Yuna’s  free skate score reached 150.06, an astonishing 13% higher than her previous world record of 133.95. This is truly a world record, and Kim Yuna won over Michelle Kwan who was her role model for figure skating. However, there is a feeling of sadness and happiness in the air.

Figure skating is hardly cheap nor easy. Figure skaters train daily for many years to perform in a competition that lasts less than 7 minutes for them on the ice. To figure skate, it also costs much money and many athletes in some countries cannot afford the money and this reality pushes them to quit their career and dreams immediately.

The same case applies to Kim Yu Na. Although she was a “brilliant genius” according to her first coach, her middle-class Korean family could not afford the money for Kim Yu Na’s training fee. She also couldn’t find a suitable training place so she went to the Lotte Playground Ice Rink to practice there while other kids skated.

Compared to her rivals in Korea’s rival country, Japan, Asada Mao and  Miki Ando were sponsored earlier because figure skating is popular in that country, and while they practiced on the ice rink rented for individual, Kim Yu Na could not rent a place to practice.

Tears of relief came after she finished her figure skating, as she relieved the pressure put on her by her country and by the Olympics.

The hardest obstacle that Kim Yu Na overcame was the financials. Since the Winter Olympics is the party for ‘white’ people’ the only competition that Koreans could get was the short track skating and the country/athletes put full effort on the short track to get a gold medal which explains the South Korean team’s surprising ability to outskate other athletes. Kim Yu Na could not get the attention of a sponsor before winning the Junior World’s Figure Skating. As part of their culture back then, Koreans did not care much about other winter sports.

Kim Yu Na was finally sponsored including by a small town chiroprotactic hospital who did not help her financially but still gave free treatment for her injuries.

Back in the 1950′s, the Korean police arrested two figure skaters practicing on a frozen river due to their appearence being too sexually vulgar in public. Most of the Korean people did not care about figure skating before Kim Yu Na arrived, even if there was a figure skating show on the television, they would say “Wow, they must practice really hard~ Let’s change the channel.”

As Kim Yu Na progressed, many South Koreans began to hope for her to win the country’s first gold medal for figure skating and so Kim Yu Na began to garner attention from the Korean media. After the Korean media looked into Kim Yu Na’s background, they were very shocked about Kim’s financial situation as a figure skating athlete. Kim Yu Na wasn’t able to change her skates at all and was forced to stick with skates that were worn out beyond their expiration date, thus her feet hurt frequently for that reason.

The Korean people started to help Kim Yu Na by requesting corporations to have Kim sponsored and appear on commercials. KB Kookmin Bank started become a financial sponsor of Kim Yu Na so she could concentrate on her skating only.

Kim Yu Na shows much potential as proven by the Vancouver Winter Olympics to both Koreans and the world. She started to become the ‘citizen’s fairy’ in South Korea and she began to gain at least 23 commercial contracts per year and get even more sponsors.

Myriam Loriol Oberwiler (Switzerland) became one of Kim Yu Na’s obstacles as well. Myriam described Kim Yu Na as an overrated athlete and judged Kim Yu Na unfairly. In the 2008 Grand Free Series ‘Cup Of China’, Myriam gave a “wrong edge” judgement on Kim Yu Na’s triple flip combination and gave a warning to Kim Yu Na to mark up her practice on her technique.

However, Myriam raised a white flag to Kim Yu Na in this year’s Winter Olympic as Kim Yu Na was very careful and smoothly skated as not to get lowered in score or receive any warning. In short, she was nothing short of perfect in terms of figure skating.

From her humble background to the Vancouver Winter Olympics, Kim Yu Na was not the only person who gained a gold medal. Her coach Brian Orser also achieved a gold medal for her and his goal.

Brian Orser was the  Canadian figure skater. He is the 1984 and 1988 Olympic silver medalist, 1987 World champion and the 1981-1988 Canadian national champion, however he never had any connection with a gold medal or gold medalist. When Orser saw Kim Yu Na, he saw the potential of her skating and began to coach her, which paid off this year as the team won the gold medal for figure skating.

Brian Orser (Right) lift his head up to the ceiling in both relief and happiness as the score is announced for Kim Yu Na's skating which had her win the gold medal.

She was very disappointed. She had an interview when she said she wasn't satisfied. That's how much pressure is put on these athletes; they aren't happy with a silver medal. I felt horrible when Mao Asada stood on the platform. She did an amazing job. She should've been proud, not disappointed. And, realistically speaking, the only way she could have won gold was if she had a perfect performance.

    • Jion

It's sad to Mao that she has a rival like Yuna Kim..
But, I think so. Mao should not be disappointed!
Although I'm Korean, I want to cheer Mao a little..
Girl, cheer up! and try harder and harder!

      • Joan

        I'm Korean too!
        Go Kim Yuna!!!

  • jane

Am I the only one who noticed why Vladimir slightly emphasized the word "gladly"?

    • Joan

      Nope.

  • Maria

While I am delighted that Ms. Kim won the Gold. She is exquisite. I am equally delighted that Brian Oser was as well. He is such a wonderful coach, skater and mentor. I am also impressed that a young lady such as Ms. Kim is devoid of arrogrance.

You should use an editor before publishing. It’s not appealing to read articles that are not correctly structured or incorrect grammar is used. Your English is good, but I can tell it’s not your first language. I’m Korean as well. Imagine if I wrote a blog in broken Korean with bad grammar. I don’t think people would enjoy reading it. Not to sound offensive at all. I would glady help.

    @A

I just fixed four [[[simple]]] grammar mistakes at a glance in Yu Kim’s article.
If you see any other mistakes, then by all means please point them out.
We would ‘gladly’ love to receive more of your feedback.

Thank you. Chief Editor- Vladimir J

    Good article, I was moved.

The Japanese athlete in the fourth picture seems so dissapointed…

  • Steve

Whatever happened to sport being fun for the athletes?

  • katie

I enjoyed reading this article. It touched stories that not many other articles talk about. Also, it is ok to show that English is not your first language. There is no standard native- speakers-only-English. Yes, even in the news. A, if you want to help- go and get yourself your own news- writing job.

  • Amanda

A, don’t be rude. I thoroughly enjoyed the article – the language was from the heart and that’s all you need to communicate effectively. I learned more about Yu-Na here than I have learned anywhere else in articles with perfect English.

Great article, Vladimir. I didn’t know what a struggle Yu-Na has had to overcome to stay in the sport. I guess there are little Korean girls signing up by the bucketload now, that should be good for the sport in the future.

Wonderful article. My wife and I are ardent figure skating fans for many years, and it is patently obvious that Michelle Kwan has a worthy successor for the title Queen of Figure Skating. She is a lovely and wonderful young lady. I wish her all the best.

  • keith

Sadly no one undersood what Kim Yu-Na achieved exactly.[sigh...]Her new world record is so high that nobody can catch up with any more.Even if other skaters had performed perfectly Yu-Na still would have finished at least 15 points above. It has a same value Usain Bolt’s one does.Yu-Na is a pure genius.

Wow! Thank you for this information!

  • Hong

Apart from her financial struggles, she also sufferred severely from deep-rooted injuries earlier on – probably more so becuase she couldn’t have/afford the professional team support aduquate for her level of intense training. During the 2008 World Figure Skating Championships, (shortly after her career had started to take off,) she skated depending heavely on painkillers and thus ending up a disappointing(to herself) bronze. Right after this, she made the decison to entirely give up to compete in 2008 4 continental Women’s Figure Skating Championship to kill the roots and take care of her frequent back problems and injuries (a uncommonly wise decesion for an athlete of that age and at the belated break of her successful career and spotlight). This is perhaps the reason for the little break of her tears receiving her gold during the medal ceremony of 2009 World Figure Skating Championships

Myriam gave Yu-Na a wrong edge judgement, because Yu-Na doesn’t do her flip on the inside backward edge like she’s supposed to.

Not taking away anything from Kim Yuna, but this author is the typical “The world is out to get us” Korean type (Oberwiler as an obstacle) who also wants to make it sound as if foreigners like Brain Orser were just along for the ride, hanging on the coat-tails of “their” superstar. Been living in Korea so long now, I am just about able to hold the vomit in my mouth when I read this nationalistic crap.
