39-year old Australian born WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange had been accused of two separate cases of rape and molestation in Sweden. Spokesperson Karin Rosander for the Swedish Prosecution Authority confirmed Swedish authorities have arrested Julian Assange in absentia. Swedish prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for Assange at a time when WikiLeak’s unveiling of more than 70,000 classified American military documents regarding the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan has come under fire by the U.S government “for endangering the lives of soldiers”.
Very quickly, prosecutors withdrew the arrest warrant a few hours after authorities declared they wanted to “interrogate” Assange. “There is no reason to suspect that he [Assange] has committed rape”, stated prosecutor Eva Finné. However the Swedish Prosecution Authority commented that the allegations of molestation have not been dropped against Julian Assange.
Several hours ago, Julian Assange tweeted that “the charges are without basis”. Releasing an official statement, the WikiLeaks team posted on their blog:
On Saturday 21st of August, we have been made aware of rape allegations made against Julian Assange, founder of this project and one of our spokespeople.
We are deeply concerned about the seriousness of these allegations. We the people behind WikiLeaks think highly of Julian and and he has our full support.
While Julian is focusing on his defenses and clearing his name, WikiLeaks will be continuing its regular operations.
By “regular operations”, WikiLeaks is implying that it will adamantly go ahead with the planned release of 15,000 more classified military documents despite the U.S government’s stern warnings and hints about possible legal action against the group. The Pentagon demands that WikiLeaks return the documents immediately.
At this time, the whereabouts of the elusive Assange is still unknown as he has no permanent address and often drifts from place to place, often the abodes of his friends. As for Assange’s alleged victims, names have not been released but both ages of the allegedly molested and raped victims are reported to be in the 20′s.
The founder of WikiLeaks had attended a seminar at the Swedish Trade Union Confederation Headquarters in Stockholm but was primarily in Sweden to apply for certain rights (including protection) the Swedish government gave to whistleblowing groups like WikiLeaks as some of Assange’s “government-opening” empire’s servers are located in the country of Sweden.
