Faithful Killers, Fatal Worship

On Friday May 28, prayer congregations at two Ahmadiyya mosques were attacked by grenades, gun-fire and suicide-bombers in Lahore, Pakistan. More than 90 individuals lost their lives and over 100 suffered wounds.

Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility.

Journalists reporting the hour long brutality might have been surprised to know that Ahmadiyya worship places cannot be referred as ‘mosques’, according to a constitutional amendment introduced by General Zia-ul-Haq in 1984 Ahmadis were declared non-Muslims by the parliament in 1974 during Z.A. Bhutto’s leadership of the country..

Ahmadiyya is a sect that came into being in early 20th century among Punjabi Muslims. Besides making fantastic claims like all other religions, Ahmadis relinquished Jihad(Holy war) by sword, and resolved to rely on the power of argument.

Religious extremism, especially killing and persecution of Ahmadi-Muslims in Pakistan is as old as the country itself. An army doctor, Major Mahmood was murdered by a religious mob in Quetta in 1948. A martial-law was imposed in Lahore to curb anti-Ahmadi riot in 1953. Muslim League made an alliance with ‘Ahrar’, the Ahmadi-haters, in the elections of 1951 and the religious zealots celebrated ‘thanksgiving’ because no Ahmadi made it into the parliament. Mian Daulatana, the Muslim-League Chief Minister, was sacked by the Governor General of Pakistan after the 1953 riot.

A prominent TV journalist was recently caught on tape talking to Punjabi Taliban, spewing hatred against the Ahmadis. Attempt to show strength against Facebook’s “Draw Mohammed day” by religious sections did not gain much support among Muslims in Pakistan and abroad. This brutality against unarmed, innocent worshipers could have been another show-off by Islamic extremists who fear extinction.

As families in Lahore grieve the demise of their loved ones, Pakistanis all over the world feel perplexed over the resolve of those who should be fighting the scourge of Taliban. Quoting instances of Taliban presence in Punjab, a Dawn editorial expressed,” What more will it take to convince the provincial government that the Punjabi Taliban are a reality that cannot be wished away?”

The ruling Muslim League in Punjab enjoys friendly relations with Jihadi outfits for political gains like the Muslim League of 1953. Talking to media, Senior Advisor to Punjab Chief Minister Zulifiqar Khosa said that an operation was started in the tribal areas because the writ of the government was challenged, but Punjab is not facing such problems.

Justice Munir and Justice Kayani wrote in their report on anti-Ahamadiyya riot of 1953, “If there is one thing that has been conclusively demonstrated in this inquiry, it is that provided you can persuade the masses to believe that something they are asked to do is religiously right or enjoined by religion, you can set them to any course of action, regardless of all considerations of discipline, loyalty, decency, morality or civic sense.”

A proper analysis of religious extremism and its influence on military, politics and government could help understanding the depth and width of the problem. After condemning Arabs for the 9/11 terrorist incidents and invasion of Afghanistan, US media and administration has already identified that the root-problem exists in Pakistan..

USA and their allies are waging a war against the terrorists to address their own security problem but Pakistanis have been mutilated and oppressed by these faithful warriors for ever.

Educated Pakistanis must rise up against religious fanaticism if they do not want to see their country descend into a Somalia.

erg.. I hybrided that last pgararaph, Andy, so it had a different meaning than I intended. Not enough coffee yet What I ment was..Its not highly educated people thats needed the most, although they are always appreciated. The reason small schools typically have better results in spite of the fact they attract lesser educated teachers is they have a smaller student teacher ratio’s. The educators can give closer attention to each student, and yes.. address their personal problems if thats the barrier to the education. In the larger schools though, they channel all their resources into paying this absurd unfunded mandate, and force the schools to have huge student teacher ratio’s. The students don’t get the same attention in this One Size Fits All attitude NCLB forces on all the schools. If they really want the students to get a better education, instead of using tests as the primary teaching tool, and requiring super high educational standards on the educators, they should seek to lower the student teacher ratio, and hire a ton more counselors. Frankly, I think in the inner city schools where parenting is sometimes totally absent, a mentoring/ big brother program would be the most influential on the success of many of the students and worth the money.

Even in Fargo, a certain percentage of single dreege educators can be hired- but most (As NCLB requires a bachelors in any secondary teaching subject, even wrestling coach) need MUCH more education. Go to a small school in the middle of Rural America, though, and its almost impossible to find a teacher who has a masters in Bioligy who has a bachelors in music.. or home ec or any other of the myriad subjects they NEED to have educators double up in order to provide the students in that small school with a proper education.. and get them to teach for under $30 a year.. You cannot even move from school to school in fargo without the raised requirements. Could Realist get his job back? I doubt it. This is resulting in an employment pool of aging tenured teachers with job security stuck in jobs that are burning them out stuck in small towns.To address what you said about cleaning up the schools THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLEDGING WHAT THE PROBLEM IS!!! It doesn’t matter what the education level of the instructors is, nor how much money you put into the school if you have disengaged students who’s parents don’t give a fuck about their education. Thats why the schools in the larger cities are failing, they ignore the truth about what the problem is, and NCLB is trying to shove irrelevant standards down the schools throats. Just as Realist has been doing here. In the smaller schools in the smaller communities, they don’t have that problem. They don’t need teachers with masters dreeges, they need caring mentors who are willing to address students problems to help them learn. I know its more expensive, but the solution isn’t instructors who have 15 times as much knowledge than they need to teach a subject, they need smaller class sizes, and more social help to engage the students. The question shouldn’t be if the teacher has a masters it should be what student load the counselor has, and can the teacher give one on one attention to each student.

NCLB has tecared an untenable working condition for the teachers where they are being pushed out of their profession with no properly trained replacements to fill their spots. That was not the case in the Fargo School District where I taught, and I think it’s a gross exaggeration as well. I can only think of one teacher offhand that was pushed out because of qualifications, and the reason being that she refused to take the summer courses to be qualified. Its about having a working school system that properly educates the children. I agree but in some cases (not the black and white argument that you attempted to attribute to me) the teachers are the problem. There is zero reason to reward an incompetent teacher when (in Fargo’s case) there is a huge lot of teachers from which to choose. Of course, my opinion doesn’t hold any water against the complex one you’ve developed from talking to your childrens’ teachers . I’m still waiting for any semblence of an argument from you regarding accountability of any kind in school funding. Maybe you should have your kid’s teachers tell you your opinion on this one as well.

When you discuss these brtaul attacks on Ahmadis mosque with your non-Ahmadi friends in Pakistan most of them are actually jubilant and celebrating these attacks. People here consider it as their part of faith to kill Ahmadis so it is not possible in Pakistan to repeal 2nd amendment because it is a bitter truth that this amendment is according to the will of majority of Pakistanis and this laws is among which was made on the will of people.So, it is not possible that these laws will change due to any internal pressure. Only some foreign pressure can change these laws. This is true that we are facing discrimination in our society because i know one thing the day any person declare i am Ahmadi in my university this will be the start of life in hell for him. So u can get an idea that this discrimination and hate is not only among the illiterate but also among the most educated society. Hate preaching against Ahmadi are publicly done even in the boundary of our campus. Monthly meetings are done under universities where the topic of discussion is how we can destroy Ahmadis. Even notices are posted on notice boards and pamphlets are distributed.
