How Do You See America?

America, the land of the free and brave…and wars – can not be ignored from the conscious of Indian Sub continent for a variety of reasons other than the Afghan War.

Throughout its brief lifetime, America has constantly been in military conflicts both necessary and mostly unnecessary. Does the U.S.A still have a thin layer of imperialism left from the 20th century? Is the U.S.A addicted to war? Lots of people don’t like the war in the Middle East, but the U.S especially seems to be addicted to war in general throughout its history and even today in many parts of their society.

The U.S fought wars for their independence, against Mexico, Spain, and most especially Britain in the War of 1812. After World War II , the country has been in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, with unknown wars in Laos and Cambodia with some other military operations in the regions of Asia. Then the U.S got into the Gulf War, Afghanistan War, Second Gulf War, and bordered on nuclear war with the former Soviet Union.

Moreover, the U.S invaded, bombed, isolated, stripped, and had military presence in other regions in the world such as Cuba, Haiti, Somalia, the Sudan, Bosnia, Kosovo, Serbia, Libya, Panama, Grenada, Yemen, and other places.

The U.S is also the numero uno military spender, and as of 2008 according to the SIPRI, the U.S spent more than607 billion dollars on their military alone.

With a tag like that and a Nobel Peace Prize on his chest, Obama has a lot of work to do to salvage this war crazy image of America. Can he do that or is this just a pipe dream in the collective conscience of the world? Equality, fraternity and liberty – what is you take on the future posture and image of America?

The Afghanistan and Iraq wars ($1 trillion so far), will cost $200-250 billion more this year, including hidden and indirect expenses. Obama’s Afghan “surge” of 30,000 new troops will cost an additional $33 billion — more than Germany’s total defence budget.

If Obama really were serious about restoring America’s economic health, he would demand military spending be slashed, quickly end the Iraq and Afghan wars and break up the nation’s giant Frankenbanks.

You totally forgot to factor in the al-Qaeda and the Taliban. You think after years of effort America will just give up? The Taliban are just waiting out in the Afghan mountains and al-Qaeda is everywhere as proven by the hundreds of terrorist events around the world since 1998.

Does America think it can fight terror with guns alone. Al Qaeda, Taliban and now the Pakistan Taliban all are creation of Western attacks over muslim territories. The muslims are galvanising their efforts against the West. Don’t forget the Hamas and other groups in the middle east. They have come into being because of West attempting to enforce their ideologies. If America were to keep chasing all these groups, it will remain engaged in combat for this century without any meaningfull results. You calculate the cost.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
