Nepal Dad Mistakes Son for a Monkey, Shoots Him

In a tragic accident, a man shot his own son, mistaking him for a monkey in western Nepal. Police said that Gupta Bahadur Pulami, 55 of Argakhanchi district shot his son Chitra Bahadur, 12 dead on Friday.

Gupta Bahadur had gone to his farmland with a gun to chase away monkeys eating the family’s maize crops. Chitra Bahadur, 12, had already climbed up a tree to also drive the animals away when Gupta Bahadur, believing a monkey to be there, shot at the tree and killed him.

“I did not know that my son was in the tree. I was heartbroken when I saw him hanging dead,” said Gupta Bahadur.

Police have arrested Gupta. After the incident, the village is in shock.

Monkeys usually come to nearby maize fields searching food.

Police have arrested the man. Deputy Superintendent of Police Arun Poudel said the boy’s body had been sent for postmortem.
