The government of Mexico wants to sell the lands of the Huichol people in Real de Catorce to the First Majestic Silver mining company. The lands are in the cultural and ecological reserve of Wiracuta. The aforementioned lands are also protected by the world network of sacred sites. Wiracuta is a sacred site of pilgrimage for the Huichol.
Of course, no one informed the Huichols about the mining project beforehand.
The land is known for the abundance of peyote. By the government’s unilateral decision, the charter of the UN Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which states that the authority of indigenous communities should be consulted on the implementation of any project affecting their territory, has been again violated.
Also in Mexico, First Majestic Silver has obtained a license to dig in the sacred area of the Huichol people, the act of which will disfigure the land and force the natives to relocate.
Similarly, in another part of Latin America, the Kayapo people have not been consulted by the Norte Energia company on the construction of a dam that is polluting the waters of the Xingu River.
More than 24,000 people in the surrounding areas are now being forced to evacuate as the dam and mining projects will cause flooding of their homes.
Even the Ixil people of Guatemala are in danger due to Enel Green Power’s dam project. No one spoke with the Ixil about the dam project either.
Construction of Hydroaysen, a dam project in Chile is also ongoing despite its obvious destructive effects on the ecosystem of Patagonia.
